The connection between the cost of energy and prosperity is clear. Five out of the last seven recessions were preceded by high energy costs, including the current downturn that came only a month after gas topped $4 a gallon. Rising energy prices take away money that families could spend at local businesses, hurting the economy.
Domestic, Renewable Energy
The world is now nearing the peak of global oil production, according to energy experts. As demand rises in China and India, that means America faces a supply shortage and rising costs. Meantime, half of our electricity comes from coal, which may be less plentiful than common industry estimates. And costs for using coal are sure to rise once the federal government passes legislation to control CO2 emissions.
We need to take control of our energy security in Staunton and Augusta County. Here’s our plan to do just that, while creating good local jobs and lucrative business opportunities. First, we need to do more with less, through using energy more efficiently in buildings, transportation, and elsewhere. Then, we need to make some of our energy right here, through renewable sources like solar, wind, and biomass.
